In 2013, I established my website Meleklerin Payı as Turkey’s first whisky culture blog, in an humble effort to share my whisky tasting notes and my experiences on whisky culture. It has been awarded as Turkey’s Best Personal Blog at 2016 Golden Spider Web Awards; Meleklerin Payı also came 2nd in the category of the Best Portal for which very prestigious candidates competed.
As I started out by writing a short tasting note, never in a million years I would imagine to have become a world-recognized whisky culture blogger followed by thousands of people (please see 2015 International Whisky Competition) , and what’s more, to have been awarded as the Best Blog in Turkey in a prestigious contest like Golden Spider (Altın Örümcek), organized by DorukNet for 14 years, at which very distinguished and leading experts in their own fields take place as the jury.
As a person who’s very accustomed to be on the stage, I was so excited at last week’s amazing award ceremony held in UNIQ Istanbul. It wouldn’t be possible to win those awards if it hadn’t been for my family and friends giving their eternal supports and being there for me all the time; designer/software developer friends Semra Emran and Halim Demir; and such brilliant and supportive people as Cem Narmanlı and Uğurcan Sevindik, founders of nerdeicek.com and organizers of my Whisky 101 workshops. I remember that moment we discussed whether we should name the blog as Meleklerin Payı after having watched Ken Loach’s movie Angel’s Share with my great friend Kemal Yılmaz 3 years ago (Meleklerin Payı is “Angel’s Share” in Turkish)
In addition, followers are the keys to a blog’s success, therefore I wish I had the chance to take photos with them and share those but unfortunately this is how things work in the cyber world. The least I can do is to express my endless gratitude to all of my followers.
While I was introduced to visually handicapped friends from the jury, they told ‘’we really liked that website and ‘could read’ it, we were too close to give the accessibility award as well’’. So it’s the other thing that made me really happy besides the awards. Then I felt so ashamed realizing I neglected them and never thought about it once; yet again I feel so happy to gain their appreciation without even realizing that I created a website they could follow.
www.canakkaleninevlatlari.com was selected as the Best Website of the Year and www.garanti.com.tr won the award for the Most Accessible Website.
